Starscreaming!

Starscream. He's the whiney transformer we all love to hate. We didn't get too much of him in the 1st transformers movie but hopefully he'll play a bigger role in Revenge of the Fallen.

For kids:

This is one slick jet. When transformed it really looks like an F-22 Raptor and it has a cool paint job. It looks a bit like camouflage but is really Cybertronian in design. He has a unique transformation to robot form and features several spinning gears in his chest that move when his head is turned. His transformation is challenging without being overwhelming. I think kids will really enjoy this guy.

For adults:

Sorry to compare to the 1st movie's toy of this character but it's a comparison that needs to be made - whether you have that one or not you'll probably get the point. I liked that one but this one puts it to shame. In jet mode the old figure looked fine but the underside was clunky and horribly fat with arms (which were really just huge missile launchers) and legs tucked under there. In all fairness it didn't even look like a jet from the bottom. Plus his head was always peeking out at you.

Well they went back to the drawing board with this one and man is it an improvement! This is not just a repaint. Instead of big and clunky he's sleek and smooth in jet form. The only robot bits visible at all are his hands otherwise this could be a cool little model of the F-22. The addition of the markings and symbols make him a bit more eye popping too and there are plenty of little sculpting details.

His transformation is totally different and is quite a bit of cool engineering. His head is completely hidden inside the jet and as he unfolds the body of the jet actually becomes the arms and legs and body instead of being all tucked under. It is an intricate but not an over complicated unfolding process. There are a couple of points to slot together and the tail fins that become his chest have two little black knobs that need to be matched to two little black holes as they are folded up into his body. This allows the "mech-alive" feature to work. It's a nifty little gimmick that when you turn his head several gears move in his chest.

This new Starscream may be a touch smaller than his movie 1 counterpart but the head and body sculpt are much more accurate. Plus he actually has hands. He also has missile launchers on top of his arms and he can shoot his projectiles. The only downside I could find what that the package seems to indicate "pop-up" missile launchers but they do not pop up and are just a solid piece of the arm. I won't knock off for that though since he's such an improvement in execution over the other.

He's a great fun figure with a great fun transformation that does not overwhelm.

Real Electronic Parts

Electronic Snap Circuits includes real circuit components just like the circuit boards inside radios, televisions, computers, and other electronic devices. This set makes it easy for anyone to create simple electronic circuits and devices. To operate, you simply snap the electronic elements onto a plastic grid, and then connect them together with wire pieces that snap easily into place.

The SC-300 lets you build electronic devices such as a whistle chip, speaker, alarm circuit, LED, lamp socket, fan motor, and a speaker. Additional pieces can be purchased separately, or in different models, and they can all be used together to create larger and more elaborate projects.

Making Electronics Fun and Easy

The included instruction manual offers 305 projects ranging from a simple light switch to a noise-activated burglar alarm. We found the color-coded instruction manual clear and easy to understand, and we had no problems creating any of the projects we tried. The projects are organized by levels of difficulty, and each project teaches an objective such as "To show how electricity can only pass in one direction through an LED."

We definitely experienced a sense of satisfaction as we completed each project, and we definitely learned about electronics concepts. The manufacturer recommends the set for ages 8-108; younger engineers should be able to easily follow the diagrams for each project, but will probably require their parents to help explain how everything works. So a word of warning to parents: Brush up on your high school physics! Although the instruction offers some good information, we found that we still needed to brush up on the physics we learned years ago so we could understand concepts such as the difference between a circuit in parallel and in series.

Unique Learning Experience

Creating a flying UFO from "scratch" with rudimentary electronic pieces was highly satisfying to us, and we think Electronic Snap Circuits may well help young students gain and foster an appreciation for, and interest in, how electronics work and are built.

For students who are already learning about electronics in school, this set creates a hands-on experience that makes for more fun than reading about how these things work in a textbook. So don't be surprised if report cards come back with higher grades after playing with this toy.

Parent-Child Bonding Experience

All kids love it I bought this rocket toy for my 4-year old son. It took me 1 minute to set it up in a park. My son was able to launch the rocket into the sky immediately. Did you know that painted ladies (the butterflies, that is) taste with their feet and have 10,000 eyes? You and your kids will be fascinated by all you learn about these beautiful creatures with the Butterfly Garden from Insect Lore. The kit comes with a relatively easy-to-assemble observation chamber; supplies for feeding the butterflies (you provide only sugar and water); an informative booklet of clear instructions and butterfly facts; and a certificate for three to five free painted lady caterpillars. The metamorphosis from larva to butterfly takes about three weeks from when you receive the caterpillar larvae (which arrive in a small container with all the nutrients they need). Your children can watch the larvae increase dramatically in size, form chrysalides, and finally emerge into full-fledged painted ladies (it's suggested that they release the butterflies after a few days of observation). All 5 of our caterpillars grew to healthy butterflies. They eat fresh orange slices, tissues balled up and soaked in sugar water, or flowers squirted with sugar water. It's neat to watch them eat.
